Oniru, often described as one of the more secure and desirable districts of Lagos And that reputation is not without reason. The Eti-Osa neighbourhood borders Victoria Island and Lekki, has gated residential developments, hotels, restaurants, offices and leisure venues and a visible private-security presence. But “safe” in Oniru is not a permanent condition. It is contingent upon the street, the time of day, and the type of danger we’re looking at.
There is no crime database, publicly and independently audited, that provides reliable street level figures for Oniru. So any claims that it is “the safest area in Lagos” should be taken as opinion rather than measured fact.
Oniru’s benefits are practical. Guards, controlled entry, cameras and access logs are common in gated estates and commercial compounds. Busy roads and popular venues tend to be more visible than lonely streets. The concentration of hotels and expat-facing businesses in the area means that transport and security arrangements are often more developed than in less commercial parts of the city.
Those protections don’t remove risk. Lagos is notorious for dangers such as pickpocketing, phone snatching and opportunistic robbery, especially in the vicinity of busy roads, nightlife venues and badly lit areas. Visitors are advised not to flash around expensive phones or jewellery, use reputable ride-hailing services or transportation arranged by hotels, and avoid walking alone late at night, even for short distances.
There are non-criminal hazards in Oniru too. Heavy rain in Lagos can lead to localized flooding and significant traffic delays. Coastal recreation also has its hazards. Currents, tides and changing beach conditions can make swimming risky, especially in unguarded areas.
For residents and visitors, the sensible conclusion is neither alarm nor complacency. Oniru is usually manageable for people who use secure accommodation, plan their movement and follow local advice. It is not a sealed enclave, and the presence of security guards should not be mistaken for a guarantee.
