Eco-Friendly Insulation Techniques for Nigerian Homes

In Nigeria, insulation is frequently viewed as a cold-climate issue. That is incorrect. Good insulation keeps unwanted heat out, lessens the need for air conditioners, and makes indoor spaces safer during power outages in a nation that ranges from steamy Lagos to the dry heat of Kano.

The first place to start is the roof. The ceiling can become a source of heat due to the powerful sun radiation it receives. A bright, reflective “cool roof” that uses light-colored roofing sheets or a high-reflectance coating decreases solar absorption. It should be used in conjunction with insulation underneath the roof, such as mineral wool that is sourced ethically, natural fiber boards, or recycled cellulose. A vented roof cavity should, if at all possible, let hot air out before it enters the living area.

A ceiling is just as significant. Installing insulation above a suspended ceiling can greatly minimise radiant heat in homes with metal roofs. Compared to many foam products, recycled paper cellulose that has been treated against fire and pests has less of an impact. If it is approved for safe indoor usage, recycled polyester or PET insulation is an additional option. Installing materials while damp is never a good idea since retained moisture destroys ceilings and fosters the growth of mold.

A climate-appropriate strategy is required for walls. Compressed earth building, laterite blocks, and stabilized earth blocks can all offer beneficial thermal mass by absorbing heat during the day and releasing it more gradually. 

However, they are not inherently sustainable. Local sourcing, cement composition, transportation, and building quality all affect how well they function environmentally. Earth-based walls in the wetter southern regions need to be shielded from driving rain by foundations, roof overhangs, and external finishes.

After a house is constructed, external shading is frequently more efficient than costly insulation. Trees, verandas, deep roof eaves, and movable shutters block sunlight before it reaches the window or wall. 

Although windows should be covered and equipped with bug screens, cross-ventilation, putting apertures on different sides of a room, can remove heat that has been stored. While maintaining controlled ventilation, sealing large gaps around windows and doors enhances comfort.

A building’s exposure to low-angle morning and afternoon sun can be minimised for new construction by orienting its longer sides north-south. Permeable landscaping, shaded courtyards, and reflective roofs can all help lower the temperature surrounding a building in densely populated places.

Steer clear of selecting materials only because they are advertised as “green.” Inquire about local availability, termite resistance, embodied carbon, fire performance, and end-of-life disposal. Although foam insulation may function effectively thermally, if it is not properly defined, it may pose serious environmental and fire safety risks.
