Double-volume living rooms create drama with high ceilings, plenty of glazing and an airiness that rooms of normal height can’t offer. They also form an acoustic problem. Sound ricochets off hard floors, plaster walls, glass and a high ceiling, generating fluttering echoes and blurred speech that is often described as a “boomy” room.
It’s a rather elegant solution: an acoustic ceiling baffle. These panels are hung vertically from the ceiling and interrupt reflected sound waves, converting some of their energy into a small amount of heat as sound passes through or strikes their porous surfaces. Baffles, unlike acoustic foam or oversized wall treatments, can be incorporated into the architecture of a room. They can be hung in regimented lines, grouped over a seating area, or made into a sculptural installation.

Room acoustics are often measured by reverberation time, the time it takes for sound to drop by 60 decibels after the source has stopped. A double-height room has a much larger volume than a normal room, so it needs more absorption to achieve the same acoustic hush.
The good thing about baffles is that you have 2 exposed sides. Their effectiveness depends on thickness, material, spacing, orientation, and the air gap between the panel and ceiling. Sound absorption is typically measured according to ASTM C423 or ISO 354 . Performance is expressed as a Noise Reduction Coefficient ( NRC ). A high NRC is a good indication of good absorption in the frequency band tested, but not necessarily an indication of the room sound in a finished room.
The where is as important as the what. Usually a continuous field of baffles over the main seating and conversation zones works better than a few isolated panels. Coordinate them with lighting, sprinklers, HVAC diffusers, ceiling fans and sightlines. In rooms with a lot of glass, absorption on the ceiling may need to be supplemented by rugs, upholstered furniture, curtains or inconspicuous wall panels. These treatments deal with different reflection paths, no single product solves all acoustic problems.
Practical considerations also enter into the choice of material. PET-felt baffles are usually made from recycled polyester, are lightweight and come in a wide variety of colors. Mineral fiber and fiberglass systems can provide high absorption but need to be carefully detailed and the edges protected. All products must be tested for fire performance, emissions, cleanability, structural attachment, and compatibility with local building codes.
